World Bank president's statement that unless you invest in people, you are not going to see growth, is an eye-opener
ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to the visit of the World Bank president to Pakistan for two days where he was scheduled to meet key government officials and the political leadership. One of his statements is an eye-opener: “Unless you invest in people, you are not going to see growth in the long-term, medium-term, or may be the short term...”
I can only hope that this message by Jim Yong Kim is able to enlighten our bureaucracy and political leadership and help them focus on important issues rather than just spending time on developing infrastructure projects that may be highly visible but may do little for the country’s human development. Investments in basic healthcare, education, food security and clean water are seldom considered important by our policymakers. Human development is merely a chapter in the political parties’ manifestos.
