Pakistan and Kashmir

Letter January 15, 2011
Why US doesn’t want to become a party to the dispute between Pakistan and India over Kashmir?

WOODHAVEN, NY, US: This is with reference to your report of January 15 titled “Negotiating a settlement: ‘US should join bid for Kashmir resolution’” which quotes Pakistan’s representative to the UN in Geneva, Zamir Akram.

Mr Akram should ask himself why the US doesn’t want to become a party to the dispute between Pakistan and India over Kashmir and why it has repeatedly said that it be resolved by both parties on a strictly bilateral basis. Why does Washington, which these days doesn’t tire of calling Pakistan one of its closest allies, not support Islamabad on this issue, which is clearly close to the latter’s heart?
