Consumer courts

Letter February 06, 2016
Chief minister Punjab should introduce a system for the evaluation of the cost-effectiveness of each department

RAWALPINDI: The establishment of district consumer courts in Punjab is being given wide publicity. The list of complaints suggests that the existing departments have been absolved of their duties to be vigilant in prohibiting malpractices and providing relief to citizens — and that aggrieved consumers from all corners of the district should travel to the district headquarters to seek remedies. As a result, rarely anyone will seek such a remedy.

I appeal to the chief minister of Punjab to kindly introduce a system for the evaluation of the cost-effectiveness of each department. Reorganisation or amalgamation of various departments for better governance will give better results and protect and help citizens, especially the poor ones who are great in numbers, but end up being frequently neglected.
