Inefficiency in the public sector

Many state-owned, public-sector organisations are riddled with inefficiency

ISLAMABAD: The inefficiency reported lately in various public-sector organisations is alarming. Many state-owned organisations, especially those that carry the word ‘service’ in their different titles, are riddled with inefficiency and there seems to have been little improvement in their working. So much so that retired officials, the proverbial dead wood, are repeatedly re-hired on contract and continue to perpetuate the status quo in these organisations. Employees are kept deprived of their service rights as there is little effort spent in framing and adhering to employee-service rules. The effects of this mismanagement is that the general public is served by a highly demotivated and inefficient workforce, causing incredible frustration. Indeed, inefficiency begets inefficiency.

To put it simply, improved service delivery means an improved economy and way of living for the people, but who cares in a country where all of the world’s selfish and self-centred men and women appear to have all the power?
