There is no water crisis

Letter January 30, 2016
Shall we just assume that there is no water crisis looming over us since the past five years?

LAHORE: I have been browsing through newspapers and the good news is that there seems to be no water crisis in the country— because no editor, reporter, columnist or letter-writer has thought it fit to write about it. The most that newspapers do is print a letter every now and then but some don’t even bother to do that. Shall we just assume that everything is hunky dory and all this talk about a water crisis looming over us since the past five years — that it will make us forget the power crisis — is just hot air?

Can we keep resting on our laurels — in other words, keep using what we have — and hope it will last us till kingdom come and that there is no need to ‘do more’, even though the country is going through a population explosion? The politicians have their problems; the pitch has been queered for them by some unscrupulous leaders who have played politics with the issue of building the Kalabagh dam. The newspapers have their own problems of expediency. However, what is keeping the rest of us from making as much noise as we can through newspapers and television channels, which are only an e-mail away?
