First line of defence

Letter January 26, 2016
We need to wage war against lawlessness of all sorts

LAHORE: We need to accept that we are in a state of war. The enemy resides within the country so it’s difficult to counter it with old war tactics. As a nation, our approach towards this menace is naive. We have to redefine our concepts. Our enemies are not our ‘vexed brothers’ or ‘misguided Muslims’ — they are simply ruthless creatures and should be treated that way.

We need to wage war against lawlessness of all sorts — all criminals need to be handled according to the law and only then can we ensure sustainable peace. Our first line of defence in this war is the police service — we need to equip, revamp and reorganise it so we can have a more effective intelligence network. Instead of spending needlessly on new counterterrorism departments, the police force needs to be trained, mobilised and revitalised.
