KARACHI: This is with reference to Imran Khan’s article of January 13 titled “Righteous confusion”. I have to say, and many of your readers will not like it when I say this, but the blasphemy law is here to stay. People need to deal with that reality and move on. Also, it is needed because it acts as a deterrent against people who want to commit an act of blasphemy against Islam or the Holy Prophet (pbuh). Such a law is required because it prevents people from making up a new faith and declaring themselves as prophets.
Having said that, I do agree that ensuring that only those who have committed an act of blasphemy are punished is very important because it is key to providing real justice to ordinary people. But I think those who want to get rid of the law are living in a fool’s paradise.
