Criminal Prosecution Bill

Letter January 18, 2016
It will be better for the PPP to avoid taking steps that will eventually lead to its annihilation in future polls

HYDERABAD: Recently, the Sindh Assembly passed the Criminal Prosecution Bill amid great opposition. The Bill empowers the Sindh government to quash any subjudice case. The ruling party is already facing great criticism because of its resistance to an investigation being carried out in the Dr Asim Hussain case. By passing this bill, the PPP is showing its insecurity and fear. It is trying every measure that can counteract steps being taken against it despite knowing that it is losing popularity as a consequence.

As far as the federal government is concerned, it appears to be very clear in giving unconditional powers to the Rangers irrespective of the reservations of the Sindh government. The federal government itself does not seem serious enough to ease tensions with the provincial government. As the PPP breathes its last few breaths in provinces other than Sindh, it will be better for it to avoid taking steps that will eventually lead to its complete annihilation in future polls.
