Climate change

Letter January 18, 2016
Food shortages are waiting around the corner if we refuse to build reservoirs

LAHORE: Climate change and carbon footprints are frequently the subjects of many discussion programmes. Naturally, there is a lot of talk about wind corridors and solar parks but hardly any mention of hydel power, as if Pakistan is no longer an agricultural country.

We, as a nation, are so obsessed with power outages that we are least worried about impending food shortages, which are waiting around the corner if we continue running on empty, in other words, if we refuse to build reservoirs. It is because we think a reservoir in Punjab will rob Sindh of water and will direct all the water to Punjab. We choose to remain hostage to this bit of idiotic falsehood.
