A few measures can help reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by unsafe vehicles
KARACHI: The pathetic condition of public transport in Karachi is there for all to see, but the people just seem to have accepted that this state of affairs has come to stay. The only thing that can be done to alter and overcome the catastrophic conditions of public conveyance is to require a monthly maintenance check-up of vehicles. There should be a limit on the life of public transport vehicles and they should be examined as to whether they are suitable to run on roads.
Car servicing procedures and car insurance for publicly operated buses, rickshaws and taxis should be introduced at a minimum rate so all drivers can easily afford it. The implementation of these measures can help reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by unsafe vehicles. The government should introduce these schemes as soon as possible so that owners/drivers can maintain their transport businesses and the public can commute safely.
