Provinces must focus on socioeconomic development schemes by utilising their funds transparently
SUKKUR: Why can’t those elected to govern the provinces in Pakistan understand that the Chinese are investing in China-Pakistan Economic Corridor-related projects that will be beneficial for their long-term strategic and trade interests, all the while reaping benefits for our country as well? Can the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) and Sindh governments under the PTI and the PPP, respectively, explain why they have not invested in building the necessary infrastructure of roads, telecommunications, health and education during their tenures?
It is agreed that all is not transparent with big projects undertaken in Punjab by the PML-N, but at least they exist, unlike the billions that seem to have evaporated in projects that exist only on paper in other provinces. Where are the billions allocated for building embankments to prevent ravages by floods in Sindh or what concrete steps has K-P taken to protect victims from earthquakes?
Chief Minister Pervaiz Khattak holds power in his province and nobody has stopped him from utilising the development funds at his disposal efficiently and in a manner that will boost economic activity in the area under his jurisdiction. No foreign government or investor will put at stake their finances unless there is an abundance of power generated, with an efficient distribution system in place as well as a secure law and order environment that is absolutely necessary to attract them. Without these ingredients, we can bid farewell to foreign investment.
Provinces must put their own houses in order and focus on socioeconomic development schemes by utilising their funds transparently and put in place a strict audit system to check any abuse or misuse of funds. It is time the Punjab, K-P, Sindh and Balochistan governments started delivering on their promises instead of creating needless controversies. All political leaders must act with responsibility and walk their talk.
