It is crucial that all stakeholders work together to maintain social stability and build a thriving food sector
PESHAWAR: According to a media report, a workshop was recently organised by the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad’s US-Pakistan Centre for Advanced Studies in Agriculture and Food Security Policy. Experts at the workshop called for reforming agricultural policies in line with modern trends to safeguard the interests of farmers, especially small farmers, and to ensure food security in the country. They stressed the need to formulate a comprehensive water-use policy as the country faces a per capita water availability issue. The injudicious use of water at domestic, industrial and farm levels is hindering agricultural progress as precious water is wasted in floods, the washing of floors and vehicles, and in traditional ways of irrigation rather than being put to use through efficient water management mechanisms.
The need for wheat, rice and other edibles in the country is expected to double by 2035. An immaculate planning for food security is vital for the country. Therefore, there is a crucial necessity for public institutions, development agencies, investors, researchers and producers to work together to maintain social stability and to build a thriving food sector.
