Swat’s neglected farmers

Letter January 11, 2011
I commend the article because it is akin to giving voice to those who have little or no access to the media.

SWAT: This is with reference to your report of January 9 titled “Rehabilitation: Devastated Swat farmers demand props”. I commend the article because it is akin to giving voice to those who have little or no access to the media. The fact of the matter is that agriculture in the valley has suffered the most because of, first, the war on terror and then the floods of last year.

Its revival is essential to the local economy and, in that regard, it is also a prerequisite for peace to return to the region. At the same time, the region’s tourism sector also needs to improve and a revival and resurgence in agriculture could help feed it (tourism) as well.
