Economic chaos

Letter December 28, 2015
A vast majority of people in this country, in Sindh’s rural areas in particular, live in substandard conditions

ISLAMABAD: Our thick-skinned rulers and corrupt-to-the-core bureaucrats and shrewd technocrats have ruined the economy of the country. There are fears that the country is about to descend into social and economic chaos. Nothing practical is being done to reverse the lurking socioeconomic chaos, but enough is done for the proverbial eyewash and cosmetic measures.

Increasing economic hardships have made people’s lives miserable. A vast majority of people in this country, in Sindh’s rural areas in particular, live in substandard conditions due to extreme poverty, tribal feuds, chronic disease, unemployment, lack of education and healthcare facilities, coupled with the deterioration of the rural-agro economy. Like the rulers of Sindh, the rulers in Islamabad have done little for the well-being of the people of the province. Criminal activities, due to the non-availability of job opportunities and a weak rural economy have increased to alarming levels in rural areas — but who cares in this country where rulers come from abroad to rule and ruin the economy and state institutions?
