Police framework

Letter December 27, 2015
Police reforms should be introduced as soon as possible so that our police can meet the demands of modern times

KASHMORE: A police force is regarded as the primary law enforcement agency in a country, but when it comes to the Pakistani police, their ability to enforce the law leaves a lot to be desired due to a variety of reasons. The police here have become a force that frightens and intimidates ordinary citizens. Countries such as the US and England have developed their policing systems to match the requirements of modern times. Unfortunately, in our country, the old Irish constabulary model (ICM) is in practice. The ICM was conceived to suppress the public. Though some changes have been brought through the Police Order 2002, a lot remains to be done. Police reforms should be introduced as soon as possible so that our police can meet the demands of modern times.

Reforms such as capacity building, de-politicisation, community integration and sufficient budgets must be brought in to make the police both, a public-friendly service and one that has the ability to nab criminals of all hue.
