TURBAT: Acid crimes not only leave deep wounds on the victims’ bodies, they also create immense emotional agony and mental torture. In 2014, hundreds of cases of acid attacks were reported and there were surely many more that remain unreported. The reasons behind acid attacks range from domestic violence, dowry complaints and marriage refusals.
One of the most disturbing aspects of this crime is that it is often the victims who are blamed for their plight. Many in our society believe that the victims must have done something to bring upon themselves the treatment they were meted out. I appeal to Pakistan citizens and the government to provide an environment of protection and consideration to the victims, so that they are able to commence their lives and gain confidence, employment and, most importantly, hope after going through such an ordeal.
