Water crisis

Letter December 24, 2015
People in Karachi are left with no option but to buy water at exorbitant prices

KARACHI: The water shortage in Karachi is becoming serious by the day. Since the government has shown no interest in resolving the issue, people are left with no option but to buy water at exorbitant prices. Karachiites have been left at the mercy of the tanker mafia that is fleecing consumers by charging thousands of rupees per household per visit. How can a person who has an income of Rs10,000 afford this bill every week? The city’s water authorities say they do not have enough water to supply but after extra payments, they are willing to supply it via tankers.

If more dams were available today, floodwaters could have been stored and used for irrigation. Almost every year, a huge quantity of water is wasted because of an insufficient number of dams in our country. Political parties can never agree on constructing more dams for water storage. If our political governments do not take immediate measures to tackle the shortage of water by building new dams, all provinces could face a huge water shortage in the future.
