Treatment of minorities

Letter January 09, 2011
Minorities feel they need to be more cautious with their words and manners.

KARACHI: This is with reference to your report of January 8 titled “Minorities feel they need to be more cautious with their words and manners”. It’s a shame that we treat our minorities so horribly that they always have to be on edge when in public because at any moment one of us can accuse them of committing an act of blasphemy. The result of  this growing intolerance is that, by and large, many minorities have begun to forego displaying mannerisms and gestures specific to their religion in the public sphere and when interacting with members from the majority.

We love to lambast India but at least their constitution doesn’t discriminate against Muslims by preventing a Muslim from becoming president of the country. The fact is that India, America and Britain all treat their minorities far better than we do in Pakistan.
