Why have a judiciary at all?

Letter January 07, 2011
Let half-literate maulvis decide who is guilty and what their punishment is to be.

LAHORE: This is with reference to Salman Siddiqui’s report of January 5 titled “Hardline stance: Religious bloc condones murder”.

If half-literate maulvis are to decide who is guilty and what their punishment is to be, then why have a judiciary and a criminal justice system at all? It is the job of the courts to try those accused of blasphemy, which also means that those accused be given a chance to defend themselves. At the very least, the law must be changed so that if a person is accused but turns out to be innocent, then the accuser is given stringent punishment.
