A very basic question

Letter January 07, 2011
Ours is a nation of brain-washed sheep who follow wherever the local maulvi takes them.

LAHORE: This is with reference to Khurram Husain’s article of January 6 titled “Cheer the assassin!”. The article was brilliant — however, I would like to add that the darkness is not around us. It is within us. Recent events have shown me new faces of people I thought I knew so well. And these are people who are educated and are supposed to think before they talk. The darkness has been made to grow by us, by our elders and by their elders. It has been instilled in our minds to not question what the maulvis tell us about our faith.

Ours is a nation of brain-washed sheep who follow wherever the local maulvi takes them. This darkness is not going to go away in a minute or a month or a year. We will — each one of us — have to suffer our own darkness before we discover, amidst this darkness, our true faith. Most people are taking this whole issue as a tussle between support for or against Salmaan Taseer, and they aren’t asking one basic question: If we question a man-made law, a law that is badly misused, should we be killed for it?
