The last dance, why

It's human nature to achieve more fame and glory or greed, which is later viewed a bit harshly when we talk about the career of a professional sportsperson. Saying goodbye to the limelight is often tough for a successful athlete. In fact, it is the hardest act of his or her life.

The recently concluded World Cup is one recent example of “The Last Dance”. We witnessed some amazing performances and unbelievable results. Great players of our era, Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar Jr, Manuel Neuer and many others, showcased their talent one last time.

Despite achieving so much fame and glory, attaining one more is human instinct, a hunger for more or to accomplish, which is missing in the glorious profession.

Look at Cristiano’s cabinet full of trophies, personal accolades, and leagues almost everywhere he played. Winner of various cups, shields and the prestigious UEFA Champions League title numerous times. In addition to international trophies, Ronaldo won the EURO and the Nations League with beloved Portugal.

At the age of 41, he was among the few players to participate in the event who had crossed the forty-year mark. The champion footballer participated in the event at that age, when the hopes of a professional-quality performance from an athlete are very much fading. World Cup is the missing trophy in Cristiano’s illustrious cabinet.

Despite five previous attempts, Cristiano’s failure to win the trophy perhaps made him agree to another attempt. Such a superstar who achieved almost everything, but his willingness to win a World Cup brought him to the ground one last time. In the end, there were tears of sadness in his eyes, not joy. 

The same happened with Brazilian superstar Neymar Jr., who participated in the event despite not being fully match-fit. Neymar, who has never won a major trophy on the international stage excluding Olympic gold, decided to participate in the tournament as a last-ditch effort, which was widely applauded by the public and the media.

The Brazilian star's presence gave the team hope that they would be able to take the record number of five titles to six, but Neymar's fans saw him crying on the field after the Round of 16 defeat by Norway. A lively player who almost won it all, but left with the sadness of not fulfilling his desire to win on the world stage, ultimately retiring from international football.  

These are scenes that are painful for admirers to see their favourite players leaving the pitch in tears; certainly for the players, these are very sad moments where a lifelong desire is not fulfilled or the quest for better remains unaccomplished.

Humiliating defeat at the hands of Spain in the World Cup final also devastated Leonel Messi. Argentina, who participated in the event as the defending champions, were proud of their captain’s abilities, just as the entire team used to be proud of legendary Maradona in the 80s and early 90s.

The 39-year-old star showed his full commitment to the team, and the fans appreciated him throughout the event as they did in thick and thin of his entire career. Whenever the going got tough for the team, he stepped up and changed the course of the match.

Messi, who resisted all kinds of criticism on social media and led his team to the final with his excellent play, ultimately left the arena with his shoulders down. His dream of ending his playing career as a world champion was once again not fulfilled.

On 19th of July 2026, the world of football witnessed the two great La Masia graduates hug each other. Yamal, the future of football, commiserated with the master of the game, Messi.

Along with these three superstar players, Germany’s legendary World Cup-winning goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, also returned from retirement to become part of the team with the hope that he would help Germany lift the trophy once again. But Neuer, who had strong nerves and skills, may have bowed down to his advancing age and left the tournament early and could not achieve the dream of another international success.

Luka Modric, undoubtedly the biggest superstar of Croatian football, with so many domestic achievements everywhere he played. Probably the regret of not winning the 2018 final or the requirement of the team convinced Modric to give it another try at the age of forty. In the end, only the right decision at the right time leads to success; that is, many factors are involved in it, not just the previous performance or the pursuit, which in a realistic world does not give practical results

Call it the bitter truth of the game or something else, but the fact is that the last dance is not successful most of the time; a few, like legendary basketball player Michael Jordan, did in his final NBA season for the Chicago Bulls in 1997-98.
