Why Pakistan does not deserve the service of Atif Mian
In 2018, just a few weeks after the formation of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government, renowned economist Atif Mian was inducted into the Economic Advisory Council (EAC), which is led by the prime minister. This was an excellent choice from every angle since Mian is a brilliant economist, a professor at the prestigious Princeton University, and is the only Pakistani to be included in the International Monetary Fund’s “Top 25 Brightest Young Economists”.
Given that Mian had been given an advisory position, and that too in a technical area, I did not foresee any controversy emanating from his appointment due to his religious beliefs. However, soon my presumption was shattered when some religious quarters started to question this appointment on the grounds that Mian is an Ahmadi.
PTI’s then Information Minister, Fawad Chaudhry, defended Mian’s appointment in a blazing press conference, and I was momentarily impressed. While I have never particularly liked Chaudhry, that day he spoke like a courageous individual and, for some fleeting moments, I began to think that perhaps the PTI government was what we really needed, and that I may have been wrong to have opposed the ‘selection’ of this government. Sadly, this fantasy also did not last long since the government quickly buckled under pressure and asked Mian to resign. I was dumbfounded at this total lack of courage by Prime Minister Imran Khan and his team, particularly after that show of bravado by Chaudhry. At that point, I wrote a piece for the Express Tribune in which I pointed out that Mian did not need that job and it was Pakistan who needed him. I stated:
“At the end of the day, we are our own worst enemy. What some of us did not realise while abusing Mian was that he did not need this post – we needed him. He is a brilliant academic presently teaching at one of the most outstanding universities in the world; he did not need this appointment at all.”
It appeared to me that the reason behind calling for his removal was so trivial and that the subsequent actions of the government were so cowardly that we as a society could not possibly degrade ourselves any further. But now it seems we have outdone ourselves.
Recently, The Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Karachi cancelled a Zoom lecture which featured Mian due to the “threats the university administration was facing from extremists”. Let that sink in. This time Mian was not offered an advisory position or required to work for the government in any capacity. All he was supposed to do was lecture a few students on Pakistan’s economic performance, and even that became the subject of controversy.
The university of course mismanaged this situation. The truth of the matter is that once they made it public that Mian would be delivering a lecture, the university, unfortunately, should have been prepared for some repercussions. Nonetheless, I seriously doubt that threats from extremists alone forced the university to cancel the lecture, and suspect that perhaps even some individuals belonging to IBA asked for a cancellation of the talk. Frankly, when it comes to discussing the rights of the Ahmadis, the distinction between extremist and ‘moderate’ Pakistanis blurs to such an extent that it is impossible to distinguish between the two.
Let’s not forget that a few days ago some students “proudly” sprayed black paint onto Dr Abdus Salam’s picture in the city of Gujranwala. By doing so, they were trying to prove their Islamic credentials. I still remember the video which shows a female Assistant Commissioner being hounded by some petty students and being forced to apologise for merely suggesting that all of us, including Ahmadis, should be united. I also recall that a few months ago there was an outrage when the government announced that Ahmadis who were “expelled” from Islam through the second amendment would be included in the minority commission. The irony was that Ahmadis were declared a minority by our own parliament, and yet decades later we were not prepared to consider them even that. The Punjab Assembly even passed a bill unanimously stating that Ahmadis should only be included in the commission if they openly accept that they are not Muslims. I still remember the deafening silence when the Ahmadi mosque was attacked in Lahore in 2010. And I remember the rebuke which Nawaz Sharif received when he condemned the incident and called Ahmadis our brothers. Additionally, there have been countless incidents where the graves of Ahmadis have been desecrated.
When it comes to the Ahmadis, we as a nation have lost our collective conscience and even our sanity. We are blinded by petty hate. In fact, both the opposition and the government try to outdo each other in whipping up hate against them. It is strange that our religious beliefs are so weak that they are ‘threatened’ by merely four million Ahmadis in a population of more than 200 million. It is truly puzzling to try and decipher how a Zoom lecture by Mian, easily one of the finest brains Pakistan has produced in recent years, is somehow putting Islam in danger.
I have never personally met Mian, but I know several people who have. Before joining the academia, I worked with the State Bank of Pakistan, and Mian used to frequently interact with members of the research department there. Those who have met him have nothing but praise for him. They have told me that not only is he brilliant but that he truly loves Pakistan and genuinely wants to contribute to the well-being and progress of this nation. This is incredible given the fact that he belongs to a religious community which is openly discriminated against in Pakistan.
In conclusion, I simply wish to make a personal appeal to Mian. Sir, the simple truth of the matter is that we as a nation do not deserve you. Stop caring for us. Let us rot in our misery and hate.

Excellently written by the writer it’s such a shame where is Pakistan heading to and Which Islam do these citizens follow specially the silent spectators they can scream about atrocities minorities in India and act as deaf and dumb for their own country ! V well said it’s our loss not Atif Mian’s . May Allah guide the Official Muslims of Pakistan to follow the true teachings of Islam .
Excellent article by brother Raza Habib Raja. I fully agree with your sentiments. It is such a shame to see the state of Pakistan. As Ahmadis we have always been and will continue to be loyal to Pakistan, because that is what our Leaders (Calips) have taught us. Our 2nd head of the Community fully supported Qaid e Azam when he was opposed and ridiculed by the majority of the Mullahs (Ataullah Shah, Maulvi Mazhar Ali egg) But after the partition they all happily moved to Pakistan and began a campaign of hate against Ahmadis. The irony is glorious. Pleasure to read this article.
My utmost respect to brother Raza Habib Raja for such a bold and powerful article. I agree with your sentiments wholeheartedly, it is such a great shame that these incidents are taking place in Pakistan and shows why the country is rotting. I know the family of Prof. Abdus Salam sahib and they tell me how much love and reverence he had for Pakistan, and look at how they treated him. It should be remembered that every Ahmadi Pakistani has been and will always be loyal to Pakistan. Our 2nd Head of the Community, fully supported Qaid e Azam sahib when the majority of the Mullahs were anti-pakistan. Just goes to show who was loyal from day 1. Great article!
Bold and true statements by the author! May Allah protect u! This nation of mine, unfortunately, has become the true reflection of the prophecy by the Holy Prophet (saw) that the people of his umma will resemble the jews like one shoe resembles the other. So full of ha.tred and agg.ression!
The way we treat our minorities is against Allah SWT & His command to always act with justice. It is also indefensible under any rules of morality.
No, Atif Mian doesn't deserve to serve a country which was created in the name Islam and who doesn't respect or believe that our Prophet Muhammad PBUH is last prophet of Allah doesn't deserve to be called a Muslim. People like Malala YousafZai and Atif Mian are hand picked by Western Agencies and then they prepare them to act as their influence agents. There is no "Qaht Ul Rijal" in a country of 210 million population that we can't survive without services of This guy. These awards given from west are tools to promote their agents like Malala and Abdul Salam. Why they didn't recognize services of Abdul Sattar Edhi? because he was not their agent like Abdul Salam. Mr. Raja i would suggest you to think hundred times before promoting Ahmadis that one day we will die and we will have to answer about our beliefs. May Allah save us all Fitnas like Qadiyaniat of this " Dor Al Fitan".
O' forget about Mian. Who needs him when we have brilliant economists within our fold to help rescue our ailing economy. at the top of the lis ......ummm .... Allama Khadim Hussain Rizvi. O' I almost forgot Maulana Muhammad Shafi Okarvi whos' brilliant scientific team has just discovered , to the astonishment of NASA , EARTH IS FLAT , NOT ROUND. Of course these brilliant minds are against Atif Mian's unscientific approach to Pakistan's economy.
This is IBA' students loss and not Atif Mian!!! Atif Mian does not need the likes of this backward IBA institution which neither had the spine or the sense of academic responsibility!! Who do you think will respect students from IBA outside Pakistan after this episode? I would not even hire one for fear of their fanatic views. President, Consulting Engineering
Beautifully penned. Its very unfortunate that we treat minorities like that
Great article. It's interesting how Imran Khan is giving speeches to the President of France and Modi for discriminating against Muslims, when he against the Ahmedis in Pakistan. Clean up your own house before questioning others. It doesn't matter what Ahmedis believe in, or if they call themselves Muslims, that is no ones business. They are not a threat. They never have been.
Really? Does These Quadyanis Deserve to Serve Pakistan? I don't think so.
Do you really want people to make comment on this? Okay, there you go. It is a lesson for a 'small' faction of people in Pakistan, that they must NOT intervene in some very specific & particular things that are found in roots of our nation at all. No matter how small the matter is, this will not give you any space.
Lovely article , but unfortunately like before would fall on deaf ears!
One should not be rejected because of his faith but should also be vice versa.
Zafarullah Khan Foreign Minister of 1948 Pakistan Dr. Abdus Sallam only Pakistani Nobel Prize Winner What their belief had to do to treat them as Pariahs? Bigotry has always been a curse in the Muslim History. During Ommayade and Abbside Empires in the Muslim Army Arabs were getting better allowances and pays the non Arab Muslim Soldiers. One of the reasons of Muslim Empire in 1300 AD at the hand barbarian Mongols. If we have thieves wearing white beard as Moulanas and Saviors God bless Pakistan
Yes as being a Muslim Pakistani I truely did not deserve the services of that creature who have all the senses to understand economics but dont have that much mind which understand the diffrence of a Nabi and a cheap bloody Human being..we dont want that economics mr writer keep that huge understanding of Adam Smith Venture with you and that creature we dont need that services as country name ia Pakistan
Pakistan has no need for brilliant economists, Ahmadi or non Ahmadi, unlike the rich Western countries. What Pakistan needs to do is to make its young man power skilled and productive. The rest follows on its own. Brilliant economists any way are desk economists.
@Raza Habib, armchair critic, longing for benefits by exploiting the weak points of his own motherland. Pity.
The issue is the conversion from Sunni Islam to qadianism. It is what most offensive.
Saying that Mian Aatif don't need to serve Pakistan, Pakistan need the services by him is totally wrong. Because he is one of 25 brightest in young economists included by IMF. It is only the reason enough to disqualify him to serve Pakistan like Hafeez shekh n others. It has proven that IMF want to impose the bagging economic policies on Pakistan. Recently threat to scrap the great PAKISTAN STEEL the mother of industries, Wich can stand Pakistan on steps n govt is compelled to follow the dictation by IMF for favors of ruling classes. So, to be the ⭐ by IMF made him disqualify to serve Pakistan. But here is not the issue to disqualify Mian Atif for said above. Aouther want to say some excess about his faith n trying get sympathies for Amadies because he mostly discussed the ahmadies. Here is more to say about religion n Pakistan but there is no space to say
Dear Sir, very bold piece of writing. I was worried about your safety, but relaxed when read your address in the end ....
I 100% agree with what you have said. We as Pakistanis need to show some sanity. You are right that at the end of the day Pakistan suffers.
Excellent well written article, Raza you have covered everything in the best possible way. I pray for Pakistani nation to regain collective conscience and sanity.
Indeed, Mian doesn’t need us, We needed him ...... I wonder when and how we will be able to differentiate between economics and religion .... They cannot be mixed in any way. Economics do not influence any religion or its sects or rights ... Economics is for a Society built for humans and nonetheless stays unbiased of any sort. It just can’t be mixed.
Very well written and courageous article. Thanks for sporting Ahmadi’s .
If Ahmedis don't enjoy freedom how this guy get to work in higher posts? Problem of Ahmedis Denying Prophet Mohamed PBUH as last prophet. Yes they have freedom to deny that no question about that but then they can't say that they are Muslims and the rest are non Muslim or name their place of worship as mosque , they can name whatever but not mosque. If see you see on ground Ahmedis enjoy much more freedom compared to Muslims in France. See how they are presecuted for even saying a single word against the government in France. I hope you write about that too
This situation has risen from a 80 year old confused religious and national identity. We are a Muslim country with Islam as a State religion yet the Masjids and mudrassahs are under Mullah rule instead of state, majority of whom has corrupted the Muslims of Pakistan morally as well as mentally. This M-M alliance has always tilted everything that happens in this country in their favour. Meeting and begging foreign ambassadors of Killer nations for their support in elections is not against their moral code but an appointment of a non muslim is. The problems shall remain till the day the deeprooted hypocrisy remains in this nation.
The last sentence has summed it up very well
Excellent. All govts gave in to anti-Ahmadi elements over the decades. The IK govt series of compromises started with Asif Mian, and it is making many more. IK having just been elected or (selected) could have stood his ground and it would have started a new era of sectarian tolerance at the government level at least.
Raza, Now that you have some international exposure please do not think like every other brilliant fool out there. You may not value a sentiment but probably you do not understand it. Ahmadi's or Kaadianis they have never and can never ever mean well for Islam and neither for Pakistan - period. Atif may be a good economist, but sorry we can't accept him. Pakistan can find a good economist on its own and from its own. We already have enough crap to deal with here rather than adding onto the list and start appointing Ahmadi's or Kaadianis. Hope some sense prevail into you incase you are not one of them. Regards,
Is this threat given by local religious and political parties or the threat was a pressure from foreign countries through their Pakistani allies. I believe, no need to make it a political issue as IBA can show his lectures to students secretly without any marketing; and after this pandemic the online lecture and meeting options are widely open for the world. So what is the big deal here ? For country he can provide a guideline to improve the economy and government can follow and implement it whatever and wherever is required. Making it a huge political issue seems a phishy act which some of the bodies need to achieve something through this propaganda.
Our beloved Prophet SAW always professed worldy education for his people and adviced not to care about distance or their religion. Are they actually following their leader or have they doomed themselves to ignorance.
Why we are required to take the services of the people who are confused who do not have the right belief we have other people who have right belief who are pure Muslims we can also take the services of such people so why we are going to take the sevices of someone who is surely a kafir not according to the constitution of Pakistan but also according to the laws of Islam we should condemn this person because he is a qadiani and a non Muslim for sure and this is a belief which is very much fundamental and without this belief even none of us can be a muslim and those who support such people in any field can't be like called a Muslim we should contain such people at every ground because wherever they enter they make some confusion among people this is the reason and the other question i was trying to ask that why he if he is sincere with Pakistan he wants to contribute for Pakistan to why he does not change his belief why he does not take the services of the people who could tell him that what is right and what is wrong and is not only the non Muslims they believe on a false Prophet but also they sometimes disrespect our Prophet and our sahaba so the first thing is our Islam and the other things comes later whether they belong to the development of anything without being the Muslim without being an Islamic Nation we can't develop ourselves so for the worldly development we can't we can't actually sell our Iman. Also you gave this article a wrong title that he does not deserve Pakistan actually Pakistan does not deserve him please correct yourself
An excellent article, bravo
due to media, this is media who spreading the faith of every person, media creating confusion and chaos
