The latest Game of Thrones episode leaves many seeing red
I was personally expecting a lot more from the first episode considering all the hype created around it.
We all know the red woman. Some hate her, others are transfixed by the fiery curls, but the one thing all Game of Thrones fans can agree upon is that she oozes sex appeal and is usually up to no good. Having left many a mouth hanging over the years, the very end of the first episode has to be her most jaw-dropping moment. However, it may not be for the reasons you might think.
I was personally expecting a lot more from the first episode considering all the hype created around it.
So without giving an spoilers to the current episode, lets recap the events that could have possibly led to this startling revelation.
If we look back, the tragedy of Jon Snow, the bastard of Winterfell’s death, was perhaps the most shocking scene in the last episode of season five. As the episode tapered off, Jon was seen lying out in the cold as he gradually bled out; giving rise to the most important question, is the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch really dead?
In the same episode, Sansa Stark is seen trying to escape from the treacherous Ramsay Bolton by lighting a candle to catch Brienne of Tarth’s attention. In the process, she is caught by Ramsay’s obsessive lover, Myranda, who meets her fate as Reek pushes her to her death, creating a strong bond between Reek and the princess.
While Sansa was trying to escape, her youngest sister, Arya is seen utilising her powers from the House of Black and White; she disguises herself as one of the underage girls requested by Meryn Trant. Upon attaining close proximity, she shape shifts back to herself and stabs him in the eyes, all the while explaining why she was murdering him. Arya was confronted by the 12 faces that Jaqen possessed, and when she saw her own face as the last one, she was suddenly struck with blindness.
Daenerys Targaryen; Khaleesi, Mother of Dragons; possibly one of the strongest characters of the show, is rescued by her dragon child, Drogon, and flown away from Meereen, only to be confronted and captured by Dothraki’s army.
The members of House Lannister had been up to their usual antics although Cersei has a sudden change of heart and confesses all her sins to the High Sparrow. Cersei is made to undergo an atonement, requiring her to strip naked and walk through Kings Landing, before being able to return to the Red Keep. Upon reaching her destination, Cersei is welcomed by Qyburn who comforts her and a beast like man is introduced, who vows to protect his queen from any harm. As Cersei embraced the beast, her innate animalistic cunningness oozed out.
Cersei’s lover and brother, Jaime was last seen tending to a dying Myrcella Baratheon, his daughter born out of incest. Myrcella was poisoned by Ellaria Sand, Oberyn Martell’s lover.
Tyrion Lannister, the dwarf, who began season five as a disgraced fugitive, is now the temporary head of Meereen; Daenerys has taken off while Daario and Jorah hopelessly look for their beloved Khaleesi.
With all of these cliff hangers, the ten month gap between the finale and sixth season premiere was consumed by fans reading every article available to draw their own conclusions, merely because the wait was killing them
Since the suspense had bordered on the verge of overbearing, the first episode seems to have been a bit of a let down, there are still many questions that have been left unanswered as it felt like a slow beginning. Some characters were not even seen in the episode.
But the last few minutes of the episode proved that it wouldn’t be Game of Thrones without that viciously, conniving plot twist right at the end.
