Vulgarity in films

Letter November 24, 2015
A film industry is a mirror of the society, showing people where they are going

ISLAMABAD: There is heavy criticism directed towards the Pakistani film industry these days because of the seemingly increasing vulgarity in movies. I want to draw the public’s attention towards its own behaviour and attitude. Art — music, painting, film, drama, poetry, books — is actually a reflection of society. Films and dramas are meant to entertain the audience and are largely made based on the choices of the viewers. We watch Bollywood and Hollywood movies with great interest without batting an eyelid at the vulgarity in them but when it comes to our own industry, we suddenly remember our traditions.

I wonder why we take our so-called traditions so seriously when Pakistan has in the past been ranked as one of the top countries where pornographic material is watched. Our film industry is a mirror of our society, showing us where we are going. It’s high time we decided who is to blame for this. We are all responsible for building this structure of society. Each one of us should look at their personal morals and values before pointing fingers at others.
