US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump joked that women in the Islamic world might prefer to wear burqas because "it lessens the need to apply make-up."

Referring to the burqa and the veil as the "you know what", Trump while delivering a riff in New Hampshire about how American foreign policy has destabilised the Middle East spoke about an interview he watched of a woman, during which she was questioned about the burqa.

I love the Muslims: Donald Trump

"I saw a woman interviewed. They said, 'We want to wear them, we've worn them for a thousand years. Why would anybody tell us not to?' They want to!" Trump said. "What the hell are we getting involved for?" he added.

Offering a reason why these women may prefer to wear these coverings, other than as a religious practice, Trump said "Fact is, it's easy. You don't have to put on makeup, look how beautiful everyone looks," the questioning "Wouldn't it be easier? Right? Wouldn't that be easy? I'll tell ya, if I was a woman I don't want to."

I could have prevented 9/11: Donald Trump

He then pretended to brush his hand across his face and continued the impression, "I'm ready, darling, let's go!"

Many took to Twitter displeased with the remarks.

Islam in the US has become a widely discussed issue among Republican candidates. Republican contender Ben Carson expressed his opinion in September on how he does not believe the country should elect a Muslim president because Islam is inconsistent with the Constitution.

A Pew Research survey last year found in comparison to other religious groups, Republicans and Republican leaners view Muslims much more negatively. The one per cent Muslim population of the country is also viewed most negatively of all religions in the eyes of the general public.

Donald Trump says he will consider closing some mosques in US

Last month, in a shocking statement, Trump said he would consider one man’s request that America “get rid of” Muslims.

At a town hall meeting in New Hampshire in Septmeber, a man asked Trump, “We have training camps growing where they want to kill us. That’s my question, when can we get rid of them?”

“We’re going to be looking at a lot of different things.  A lot of people are saying that, and a lot of people are saying that bad things are happening out there. We’re going to be looking at that and plenty of other things,” Trump responded.

Trump considers getting ‘rid of’ Muslims when president

Trump had also agreed with the man when he had stated that Muslims were a problem in the US and that President Barack Obama was himself a Muslim and ‘not even American’.

Raj - USA | 8 years ago | Reply @Yusafzai: They claim to be muslims but do not follow Islam. Whenever someone claiming to be muslim does something bad, they claim that it is not islam, that islam does not teach these or the perpetrators of those acts are not muslims. In Indian Kashmir, the hurriyat raises Pakistan's flag on one hand are ISIS flag on other hand and shout pro-pakistan and pro ISIS slogans. Have you ever heard any muslim of or muslim from Pakistan object to Hurriyat raising ISIS flag and Pakistan's flag together or when they shout pro-ISIS and pro Pakistan slogans simultaneously? These muslims support ISIS and the world sees it. What would you call them? Would you call them muslims and followers of Islam, a religion that you claim preaches peace? Both cannot be true. One is fake. You may not agree but it is what others think. @JusticeHunter: "He is doing a good job of reducing vote bank of republicans, sure no Muslims will ever vote him. Great job, keep on doing pal. “YOU ARE FIRED”. The percentage of muslims in USA is just about 1.6%. There are just about 6 million muslims of which probably half million have voting rights, if you leave out those who are below voting age, are just residents but not citizens and illegals. Muslim votes in USA is immaterial. On the other hand Trump may attract more votes by speaking openly on muslims. In India there are nearly 200 million muslims making up for 18% of its population but they could not do anything. At one time the imam of Juma Masjid had not of influence and carried a vote bank. Today, if he supports any political party or candidate on religious lines that party or candidate is sure to lose. Leaving aside everything else, Democrats have very slim chance of winning. They already had two terms and only two times in the past has any party came to power in USA for the third time and even these two times were long ago and under very exceptional circumstances. Obama is a great President and in my opinion, he has done a very good job. But, Republicans will come to power in 2016. Donald Trump and Ben Carson are leading the leading candidates of Republicans and both have serious reservations on muslims.
