After weeks of contemplation, Lionsgate has roped in Naomi Scott to play the role of Pink Ranger in the highly anticipated Power Rangers reboot, reported Cinema Blend.

Naomi Scott, who previously appeared in television series Terra Nova and the latest release The Martian, will now essay the role of Kimberly in Power Rangers. Although details about the remaining cast members have been kept under wraps, KJ Apa, Austin Butler and Mitchell Hope are in the running for the role of Jason (The Red Ranger). The directors have their eyes on Daniel Zovatto, Ross Butler and Brian Mac for the character of Zack (The Black Ranger).

The movie, which is being penned by screenwriters Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller, has been described as a reinvention of the long-running franchise. The duo previously served as scribes on commercial properties, such as X-Men: First Class and Thor.

The storyline revolves around a group of high-school teenagers, who find themselves with extra-terrestrial powers and utilise them to defend the world. Kimberly in particular was one of the five original Power Rangers chosen by Zordon after Rita Repulsa attacked earth. She became the Pink Ranger after receiving the Pterodactyl Power Coin and the Pterodactyl Dinozord. Her character arch in particular is different from all other rangers as she evolves into someone more kind-hearted after switching bodies with Billy Carnston (The Blue ranger).

Following its success on TV, Power Rangers was adapted into a film in 1995. Directed by Dean Israelite of Project Almanac, the reboot is slated for release on January 13, 2017.
