Widening Multan Road

Letter October 05, 2015
Multan Road needs to be widened on an urgent basis and the authorities concerned need to focus on this task

LAHORE: Lahore’s main entry and exit points are through Multan Road and GT Road. Multan Road remains choked because of the bus stand near the NHA office. Facing Multan, the bus stand is on the right side of the road and the passengers arriving on local buses on the left side of the road have to cross the main road to reach the bus stand.

There are narrow lanes on both sides of Multan Road while the traffic intensity has increased manifold. This road needs to be widened on an urgent basis and the authorities concerned need to focus their attention towards this task. Otherwise, with traffic increasing by the day, it will become almost impossible for vehicles to pass on this road without getting stuck in traffic repeatedly. Instead of creating signal-free zones in affluent areas, the widening of exit and entry points on this road used by motorists from all strata of society, should have been the first priority. The chief minister of Punjab should find time to travel on this road unannounced to learn of the hardships road users face daily, especially near the Shahpur Road cut, where 40-foot buses attempt at making U-turns.

There is a feeling among ordinary citizens that roads in upscale areas are being developed at the cost of the roads used by the rest. Such a feeling of deprivation must not arise.
