FAISALABAD: Members of the Academic Staff Association (ASA) of the University of Agriculture Faisalabad on Monday condemned alleged police brutality against the son of a professor at UAF. The association said that they would take to the streets if the police did not withdraw the case.

A resolution passed at the meeting says, Sheraz, a student of MPhil in animal nutrition, had been involved in a traffic accident with a woman’s car a few days ago. The woman called MPA Mian Tahir Jameel to intervene and he told Mansoorabad police to put Sheraz in lock up.

Members of the ASA said that Sheraz had not only been detained illegally but he was also badly beaten up in police custody.

The resolution says a few days after he was picked up, the police registered a false case against Sheraz out of fear of the bailiff. It says a medical report had been presented in court but no action had been taken.

“Such incidents speak volumes of the state of lawlessness in the country,” the resolution says.

Mansoorabad SHO Saeed Anwar Baloch told The Express Tribune that the accused had been sent to judicial remand.

He said the investigation of the case had been assigned to Sub Inspector Khalid Mehmood and the Madina Town SP was supervising the investigation.

The SHO denied allegations of torture and bias.

MPA Mian Tahir Jameel insisted that he had only reported the facts to the police and had no grudge against Sheraz.
