Meat scam

Question is: when will food health and safety authorities of other provinces wake up and restrict similar restaurants

ISLAMABAD: The meat scam is not a recent occurrence. Rumours regarding the questionable quality of mutton and other meats have long been in circulation. There have been cases where donkey, pig and horse meat has been supplied instead of beef or mutton. In such a scenario, some shops get sealed and the butcher and vendors get arrested because of the ‘scam of dubious meat’. However, the demand for meat in Pakistan seems to be way higher than the available supply, increasing the frequency of such scams.

The response of the Punjab Food Authority towards fast food restaurants that have poor hygienic conditions and its raids to seize ‘non-halal’ meat are highly commendable. The question is: when will the food health and safety authorities of other provinces wake up and restrict similar restaurants and food shops from potentially harming consumers. It’s time public health and safety measures were implemented all over the country.
