Spirit of patriotism: Tribute paid to Captain Karnal Sher Khan Shaheed

Minute of silence observed at Defence Day ceremonies across province

Patriotism was in the air. All cantonments from across the province celebrated Defence Day with traditional fervour and solemnity. A minute of silence was observed at ceremonies in various parts of the province, honouring sacrifices of martyrs.


A ceremony was held in Swabi pay tribute to Captain Karnal Sher Khan Shaheed, who received Nishan-e-Haider for his bravery in the Kargil War. Brigadier Muhammad Imtanan Babar laid the floral wreath on his grave and offered prayers for his soul. A celebration was also held at University of Peshawar where speakers paid tribute to the martyrs of the 1965 war.



Addressing the attendees, UoP Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Rasul Jan said external and internal forces are trying to destabilise the nation. He urged the youth to burn the midnight oil and work hard to combat the threats.

Arms and ammunition of the Pakistan Army were put on display for an exhibition on the occasion of Defence Day at Capt Karnal Sher Khan Shaheed Stadium, Peshawar Cantt. Army officials briefed visitors about infantry, armour, artillery, air defence and other military topics.

The highlight of the event was the march of Army Public School students on a special float prepared for the occasion.

An event was also organised at the National Institute of Science and Technology in Hangu to commemorate September 6. Rich tributes were paid to those who lost their lives defending the country.

Speaking on the occasion, Azad Gul, a retired captain of 1965 war, said, “The brave soldiers of Pakistan have crushed the opponents of the country by sacrificing their lives. We will always remember them.”

Defence Day was observed in various parts of Hazara where people from different walks of life visited the grave of Field Marshal Ayub Khan in Rehana village. They also laid floral wreaths on his grave and paid tribute to him.

Celebrations were also held at the main campus of Hazara University in Mansehra.

Participants observed one-minute silence and organised a walk, carrying pro-army placards and banners. On the occasion, speakers said the nation is once again prepared to exhibit the same level of patriotism and commitment, as it did during the 1965 war, to eradicate the scourge of militancy and sectarianism.

Similar events were held in Charsadda, Shangla, Upper Dir, and Battagram.
