He was speaking at a gathering in Karachi on the topic ‘One Belt, One Road’, Express News reported.
Munter said he saw a glorious and prosperous future for Pakistan even though some politicians and businessmen were against any development in the country. He said the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor would not only increase Pakistan’s importance but also benefit other countries in the region.
According to Munter, the international community fears instability in Pakistan. “While I was posted in Pakistan, I would spend hours each day thinking about the security situation,” he said.
While acknowledging Pakistan’s concerns regarding India as ‘understandable’, Munter stressed the need to solve all issues jointly. “I speak for improvement in the whole region, not just Pakistan,” he said. The former ambassador added that the US could only bring parties at odds with each other together. “Solving issues between them is something only they can do.”
Munter said there are many reasons for Pakistan and Afghanistan’s tense relationship. He said any improvement on security issues between Islamabad and Kabul requires long-term planning. (TRANSLATED BY ARSHAD SHAHEEN)
