Vehicles fuel corruption

Monster of corruption has undermined development and slowed the overall efficiency and performance of public sector

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan may not be the most corrupt country on earth, but it is an undeniable fact that ours is a nation where corruption in all its forms and manifestations is at work. The misuse of official vehicles and fake bills submitted by people in power is one form of corruption which has played havoc with our organisational governance in public- sector organisations. Sources at the office of the Auditor General of Pakistan reveal that roughly 80 per cent of official cars are misused by civil servants, leading to an excess of Rs5 billion in annual fuel consumption. Indeed, the monster of corruption has undermined development and slowed the overall efficiency and performance of public sector organisations.

Corruption in vehicle fuel consumption by politicians, bureaucrats and technocrats has been going on in Pakistan for years. Our authorities, especially the retired-rehired lot, explore different means of corruption when it comes to vehicle fuel consumption and this obviously goes unchecked since we have bigger fish to fry, as there are much bigger corruption scandals that regularly come to light.
