INDIA: Taj Mahal, one of the wonders of the world, has become the first historic monument in the world to get a Twitter account.

It released its first tweet on Saturday, India’s Independence Day.

Standing proudly on the southern bank of Yamuna River in Agra, India, the grand Mughal structure embodies Indian, Persian and Islamic influences.

Built in the loving memory of his late wife, the Taj Mahal was commissioned by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in 1632 and is also a World heritage site.

The astonishing monument draws nearly 8 million visitors annually.

The first tweets of the monument read:

The official launch of the twitter handle took place in Lucknow earlier this morning, inaugurated by the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, who also posted his picture at the Taj Mahal in a tweet soon after.

Within a few hours, the monument has gained thousands of followers as people zealously share their pictures and tweet memories of their visits.
