Sunhera Beach encroachment

Letter August 15, 2015
Sunhera Harbour is public property, and thus cannot be allotted to anyone for personal use or for commercial purposes

KARACHI: Fishermen of Manjar Goth, Deh Mann, Deh Allah Bano and Mubarak village have urged the government to remove illegal encroachments along the Sunhera Beach. This demand was raised at a meeting near the Sunhera Beach in Manjar Goth recently. A large number of fishermen from the local Sindhi and Balochi communities attended the meeting. According to them, their harbour, where they anchor their fishing boats, had been grabbed by the land mafia. They said that they had lodged several complaints against encroachment, but the department concerned had not taken any action against the land mafia. Reportedly, the land mafia has grabbed vast areas where they have illegally erected gates and constructed walls.

In addition, private guards have been stationed all along the beach by the mafia. These guards charge beachgoers and local fishermen a fee to access the beach. It should be noted that the Sunhera Harbour is public property, and thus cannot be allotted to anyone for personal use or for commercial purposes. The Sindh government should promptly investigate the matter for the sake of justice.
