KARACHI:

The Karachi Traffic Police announced new rules for schools vans on Saturday to ensure the security of the children. The van owners have been given a deadline of less than two weeks to follow the rules.

According to the rules, school vans should be blue and given special protocol in traffic laws. Vans will only run on petrol or diesel. The school administrations will not be allowed to run Suzuki pickups as a school van, as it is illegal. It will be necessary for an attendant to be present in the van. The vehicle is prohibited to go to a fuel station with passengers. Overcrowded vehicles, the playing of music and smoking will also not be allowed.

The responsibility of implementing these laws will be given to the school administrators and those in violation of the rules will have their registration revoked, said an official.

Action will be taken against school vans failing to meet the requirements from August 21, he added.
