Surpassing foreign rulers

Letter July 28, 2015
I think the biggest credit for #APJAbdulKalam is that till his last moments, he was out and about among the people

JOHI: With the PPP co-chairman holding meetings of his party, regarding the reshuffling in the Sindh cabinet, in Dubai, it seems as if Karachi has lost its status as the capital of Sindh.

Our forefathers struggled against foreign rule on the plea that the fate of indigenous people was being decided in England and Delhi. We fought battles against foreigners for looting our resources. Yet, the British put in place durable infrastructures and modernised different fields of life. Our indigenous rulers, instead of improving infrastructure, destroyed whatever foreign rulers had put in place.

Staunch supporters of democracy have been put in a very precarious position. Our rulers have been insulting the mandate of the people and abusing the cherished institution of democracy for decades. The PPP leadership in particular in the recent past has presented such a model that common folk and even the educated lot get infuriated at the mere mention of democracy. Can we demand of the degenerated lot of the PPP ruling elite to come to their senses? No, they are, in fact, in their full senses. They think no power on earth or from the heavens can hold them accountable. Now, the voters from Sindh have to wake up from the drugs administrated by the ruling elite for decades, in the shape of emotional slogans like martyrdom, nationalism, exploitation by Punjab, victimisation by the judiciary, pulling of strings by the establishment, etc. Voters and civil society are justified in asking that despite all allegations mentioned above, why the financial health of the ruling elite and their power is not affected.
