Corruption crackdown

Letter July 10, 2015
Recent raids and inquiries by NAB, the FIA and the Rangers were, indeed, the need of the hour and must be appreciated

JHUDDO, MIRPURKHAS: Pakistan is in the grip of deep-seated tentacles of corruption, both monetary and non-monetary, which must be cracked down upon. Corrupt practices go unchecked within our administrative structures. This double-edged sword that is widening the rich-poor gap as well as enhancing extremism among the youth should be condemned vociferously and acted against.

Recent raids and inquiries by NAB, the FIA and the Rangers were, indeed, the need of the hour and must be appreciated. The cries of politicians and government officials against these actions came in the wake of the crackdowns that exposed their involvement in these crimes. Such actions, resultantly, have produced fear amongst the corruptible and in the long term will help reduce the menace soon.

Misappropriation of funds, financial embezzlement and illegal encroachments have not only affected the development of the country, but have also tarnished its image. Moreover, the concentration of wealth in a few hands has created countless miseries for the poorer sections of society. Billions of rupees that were meant to be spent on development projects have been pocketed by the corrupt.

The recent commendable and pro-people measures must be appreciated and there should be zero tolerance for the corrupt and their practices. The culprits must be brought to book to set the right precedent. Hopefully, the upcoming Transparency International Report 2015 will show a reduction in corruption in the country.
