Fishermen need protection

Letter July 09, 2015
Govt needs to assess the issue and institute measures that ensure that warnings are given to fisherman well in advance

TURBAT: Over time, numerous fishermen in Sindh and Balochistan have lost their lives while fishing at sea. It has been reported that some travel as far as 1,575 kilometres out to the sea in order to catch fish. Furthermore, a senior official in the Met department has said that the coastal areas of the country are where storms often engulf fishermen, who lack the skills and the know-how needed to protect themselves.

Recently, in Pasni, a boat sunk with several individuals on board. They had been missing for several days with their families waiting for their return. The government needs to assess the issue and institute measures that ensure that warnings are given to fisherman well in advance, when coastal areas become susceptible to storms. They must be prohibited from going out to the sea under dangerous weather conditions.
