JUI-F rejects PPP's offer of reconciliation

JUI-F plans to submit an application to the National Assembly on Monday saying that it wants to sit in the opposition.

JUI-F rejects PPP's offer of reconciliation
Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Saturday rejected an offer of reconciliation with the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government made by Interior Minister Rehman Malik.

Malik met with the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazlur Rehman chief at his residence in Islamabad.

According to sources, Malik conveyed President Asif Ali Zardari's message to the JUI-F cheif that the PPP government wants to continue its policy of reconciliation.

The message also said that the government wants to clarify all misunderstandings that emerged after the dismissal of the two ministers, Azam Khan Swati and Hamid Saeed Kazmi.

However, JUI-F plans to submit an application to the National Assembly speaker on Monday saying that JUI-F wants to sit in the opposition.

Liaqat Khan | 13 years ago | Reply Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s decision to quit the coalition government was a retaliatory move against the removal of Azam Swati, a wealthy person known as one of the major financiers of the JUI-F. The maulana hardly acknowledged that the PPP also sacrificed its minister in this case. How long could the prime minister afford two cabinet members trading charges and counter-charges in public? It seems that the hajj arrangements were mismanaged and it created strong complaints of corruption. This episode revived the desire of the JUI-F to get the ministry of religious affairs, which seems to have acquired salience as the competition for power and influence has intensified between the champions of the Deobandi and Barelvi Islamic traditions. The exit of the JUI-F does not pose any immediate threat to the PPP-led federal government rather than it badly affected the credibility of JUI-F itself. JUI-F is already known as an opportunist party and this move will further fortify this fact. In future politics it seems hard that any party will offer JUI-F to join cabinet as the dubious character of Maulana Fazal Ur Rehman is no more a litmus test.
