PESHAWAR: In Pakistan, English is the language of instruction in most universities. We have a merit-based system in which a fixed number of students gain admission into professional public sector universities. Merit is achieved based on a formula in which weightage is given to the results achieved in Matric (SSC) and HSSC exams. It is suggested that if we set a minimum score requirement for the TOEFEL exam as eligibility criteria, it will improve the intake of English-proficient students who can better understand the courses taught to them.
For other students, we should have universities in which the medium of instruction is Urdu. The idea is that when students understand concepts, whether in English or Urdu, they can also perform and deliver well academically. Hence, the quality of students graduating from our universities will surely improve.
