Prostate cancer awareness

Letter July 04, 2015
I suggest the government conducts free blood tests to establish the PSA and cholesterol levels of citizens once a year

PESHAWAR: Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancers that men may suffer from. If detected in the early stages, it can be completely cured. A blood test called PSA level is indicative of the abnormality. Although there are other reasons for a rise in PSA levels, e.g., urinary infections, etc., but it is also an indicator of prostate cancer.

While there are, rightly, a lot of awareness campaigns in Pakistan about breast cancer, awareness regarding prostate cancer is lacking. I suggest the government conducts free blood tests to establish the PSA and cholesterol levels of citizens once a year free of charge. This practice will save many precious lives, as in an ideal situation, it is the state that should be providing free healthcare facilities to taxpayers.
