Commission Agents: Withdrawal of 14% GST demanded

The 14% GST was tantamount to double taxation, which was against the Constitution of Pakistan

KARACHI: The Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), while criticising the imposition of 14% general sales tax (GST) on indenting commission by the Sindh government in its budget for 2015-16, has said that this is an unjust levy that cannot be charged from indenting commission agents as they do not fall in the services sector. According to a KCCI statement, the indenting commission agents were already paying 5% withholding tax at the import stage, which comes under the federal government, and the 14% GST was tantamount to double taxation, which was against the Constitution of Pakistan. Dozens of indenters have approached the Karachi Chamber and sought assistance in convincing the Sindh government to withdraw the levy, which was impossible for them to pay as they are working on a very limited commission.
