Acceptance of disputed status

Letter June 04, 2015
We seem to be discussing Gaza, Yemen, the Rohingyas, Syria, Iraq and even Afghanistan, but not Kashmir

RAWALPINDI: This is with regard to Talat Masood’s article, “Harmonising state policies with economic pragmatism” (June 3). Since independence, the Kashmir conflict has been a point of contention and rivalry between Pakistan and India. In the recent past, a leading media house was discussing the issue of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), in which it showed the wrong maps of Pakistan. Mr Masood has mentioned Jammu and Kashmir as India’s most sensitive and volatile state. My point of discussion is regarding the acceptance of the disputed status of Jammu and Kashmir by Pakistanis.

If we observe Indians or the Indian government, they do not leave any stone unturned in claiming Kashmir to be part of India instead of referring to it as disputed territory. We should respect the words of our founder, Muhammad Ali Jinnah: “Kashmir, Pakistan ki sheh-rug hai.” There were times when a complete news package was broadcast by PTV covering all the recent happenings in the disputed territory. Presently, media houses refrain from mentioning Jammu and Kashmir as disputed territory. We seem to be discussing Gaza, Yemen, the Rohingyas, Syria, Iraq and even Afghanistan, but not Kashmir.
