Pay and perks

Letter June 02, 2015
I sincerely appeal to worthy lawmakers to kindly minimise their financial burden on this poor nation

RAWALPINDI: Various press reports confirm that lawmakers, the custodians of poor taxpayers’ money, are planning a fabulous increase in pay and perks for themselves. Apparently, they are unaware of the dissatisfaction of voters with their performance.

Poor voters can see most lawmakers getting richer, many even settled abroad, while the voters themselves are getting poorer. Voters can see that the Pakistan’s parliamentary system is providing luxurious employment opportunities to politicians from the ruling class, their family members and cronies. Heavily-taxed voters are not ignorant of the billions of tax money being spent to maintain unnecessary political appointments made by various top office holders. Voters can see lawmakers amending the Constitution to suit their requirements, enjoying pay and perks the whole year round, without regular attendance in parliament and provincial assembly proceedings — ignoring opportunities to discuss solutions to their provinces’ problems. I sincerely appeal to worthy lawmakers to kindly minimise their financial burden on this poor nation, and improve their attendance in legislatures as well as their performance to prevent the collapse of the existing parliamentary system.
