Threat to education

Letter May 19, 2015
After all these recent events, one fact is apparent to me now: it is not intellectuals they fear but our youth

KARACHI: The tragic death of social activist Sabeen Mehmud was still fresh in my mind when the murder of my teacher Dr Yasir came as a fresh blow. And then I read in the newspaper that we scared a highly capable woman out of this country. I was truly ashamed. Senior educationist Dr Bernadette has revealed that she had been receiving threats from a political party for her role as a member of the advisory committee.

After all these recent events, one fact is apparent to me now: it is not intellectuals they fear but our youth which might muster up courage or pick a leaf out of exemplary beings, like Sabeen, and turn out to be revolutionaries like these important figures. They can kill as many of us as they want but as long as we remain faithful to this country and adhere to the education policy first introduced by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, we can always outweigh the enemies of this nation in ways beyond their thinking.
