High-intensity blast: Suicide attack kills 11 in Hangu

Published: December 11, 2010

The blast was carried out near an under-construction hospital.

PESHAWAR:

In the third suicide attack this week, at least 11 persons were killed and 22 others were injured in Hangu, officials said.

Several nearby houses collapsed because of the high intensity of the blast, which took place near an under-construction hospital in the Pas Killay area. Officials feared that many people might still be trapped beneath the debris.

Abu Bakar Mansoor, a purported spokesperson for the shadowy militant group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi Al-Alami claimed responsibility for the attack in a phone call to media organisations in Peshawar.

“Eleven people were killed and 22 injured,” Hangu police spokesman Fazal Naeem said. Two policemen, a woman and a child, were among the dead.

District Coordination Officer (DCO), Hangu, Adil Seediq told The Express Tribune by phone that an explosive-laden vehicle was detonated on the Shahu Road area. Regarding the target of the attack, Adil said that he was not sure which building was the actual target of the terrorists. He said efforts were being made to retrieve people still trapped beneath the rubble.

Local people told The Express Tribune that the blast was so powerful that it damaged  several houses in the Pas Killay and Syedan Mohallah.

A local man said that at least six houses and seven shops had been razed, adding that after the blast, the entire area was engulfed by thick smoke and gunpowder fumes.

Local sources said the blast damaged the façade of the under-construction five-storied al Zohra hospital, said to be owned and built by the Shia community.

Local people told The Express Tribune that the area was in complete darkness after the explosion severed power lines.

Security forces have cordoned off the area and closed off the main road.

On Wednesday, the provincial government had declared Hangu as a ‘most sensitive’ district for Muharram.

Hangu district has a long history of sectarian violence and many attacks have occurred here.

Earlier on Monday, two suicide blasts killed more than 40 people in Mohmand Agency, and on Wednesday, another suicide hit killed at least 18 people.

The recent wave of terror has come on the heel of Muharram, just as the authorities beefed up security measures in a bid to thwart attacks on processions.

I plead all sunnis to stop killing shia muslims. I am sunni myself and blame them for initiating all this fight. Brought up in Hangu, i have seen all this with my own eyes. All the locals from the town have fled already. We had been living together in the same town for decades but there weren’t any problems but since Zia’s era, the crap has hit the fan hard. Many of my childhood friends were shias and we never even had discussions about any differences and didn’t really care. There was respect for one another’s belief. But now the fight is over the way you pray either with hands tied up or hanging down, is just so stupid. Height of jahilliat.Recommend

Imran Khan says these things are happening in Pakistan because we’re fighting America’s war, OK! But those people at Abdullah Shah Ghazi’s mazaar weren’t fighting anyone. These people at the hospital weren’t fighting any wars. So why are these innocent people are being targeted, Mr. Imran? Do you have an answer to that, dear sir?Recommend

For some reason, more than 90 per cent of the times it is the Pushtoons who are at the receiving end, Shia or Sunni! Whether it is the Taliban or their victims, victims of the Pakistan Army’s campaigns, or victims of NATO drone attacks on the Pakistani side of the border, they are nearly all Pushtoons. The same goes on across the border in Afghanistan. Has anyone contemplated on why Pushtoon lands are the killing fields for the games that imperial and sub-imperial powers play? PM Gilani, if he has any say at all, is purported to have said he didn’t care about the drone attacks on Pakistani territory so long as they got their proper targets (Wikileaks). Would he have been so non-chalant in case it was Multan that was being bombed? I think not. Recommend

M.A.Jinnah and the Mulsim League got it wrong – it should have been a 3 nation theory – Hindus, Shias and Sunnis. ( Iran and Saudi Arabia are different countries are they not ? )

Unfortunately, Pakistan is beyond redemption now. The Pakistani Army hijacked the nation shortly after birth and will ultimately be responsible for the destruction of Pakistan. Equally to blame are the Mullahs. Instead of instilling nationhood amongst people of the 4 provinces, all efforts have been directed at defeating India/Hindus by arming “freedom fighters”.

What is the end result ? This news and more is the end result. It is getting scarier and scarier to read the newspaper.

What did the Indians do that they got it right ? The Indians have been able to build a nation out of God knows how many provinces, languages and religions. Recommend
