Pakistan’s publishing industry

Letter April 26, 2015
Many Pakistani authors works have risen to fame thanks to efforts of Indian publishers

KARACHI: Indian publishing houses have taken a keen interest in Pakistani fiction, with Mohammed Hanif, Mohsin Hamid, Moni Mohsin and Kamila Shamsie being only few of the many Pakistani authors whose works have risen to fame thanks to efforts of Indian publishers.

Though this is without a doubt a remarkable achievement for the Pakistani literary world, it is simultaneously a failure for Pakistani publishing houses that their own country’s writers would rather sign themselves with a neighbouring country’s publishers, than with those from their own.

It is time that serious steps were taken by the publishing industry in Pakistan so that the country does not lose its writers to other countries.
