The roads of Karachi

Letter April 25, 2015
Most importantly, the people must change their behaviour and respect the law

KARACHI: When out and about in Karachi, it is not hard to notice the dangerous traffic on the roads of the city. It portrays a perfect example of danger, destruction and lawlessness. This cannot be put down to the government’s ineptness alone. The people also seem to pay the least bit of attention towards this problem.

Drivers drive their vehicle as they please without caring for traffic regulations or the trouble they cause to others. Those who travel on motorbikes seem to have a specific mindset; that they are not to follow any traffic rules and can get through a traffic jam by changing tracks and going sideways between cars.

Pedestrians, instead of using pedestrian bridges, put their lives at risk by crossing roads despite their being heavy, unruly traffic, and in case there is an accident, the car or motorbike driver is blamed. There is a need for authorities to be strict about implementing traffic regulations. But most importantly, the people must change their behaviour and respect the law.
