Celebrating Earth Day

Letter April 22, 2015
There is a need to create awareness among people regarding the urgency to respond to environmental challenges

KARACHI: Earth Day was celebrated across the globe on April 22 with outdoor performances, with individuals and groups performing acts of service to Mother Earth. The typical ways in which people around the world observed Earth Day included planting of trees, picking up roadside trash, conducting various programmes for recycling and conservation, and using recyclable containers for snacks and lunches. People also called on their governments for stronger or immediate action to stop global warming and to reverse environmental destruction.

Pakistan faces a number of severe environmental problems such as degradation of natural resources, industrial and vehicular pollution, pollution of marine environment, and degradation of human health, which means that a serious, long-term environmental policy is the need of our times. There is a need to create awareness among people regarding the urgency to respond to environmental challenges. The youth must also be encouraged to participate actively through awareness campaigns, discussions, and mass forestation and tree plantation campaigns.
