Horrific accident

Six workers died after falling into a chemical tank at a pickle factory in Karachi on April 12

KARACHI: The falling down of six men into a chemical tank at a pickle factory in Karachi on April 12 was a sad and tragic event that reflected on the poor and unsafe conditions under which workers are made to work in Pakistan. The fact that the tank was only covered by wooden planks is atrocious. Not only is such a thing dangerous for workers, but also for consumers as the tank may risk contamination caused by the inclusion of germs from the human body. The fact that the factory is situated in a residential area is, again, another issue that needs to be taken more seriously because this endangers the lives of people living in the vicinity. There is a need for the government to not only formulate fresh legislation to uplift the conditions of factory workers, but also to ensure that laws are strictly implemented at every level.
